Quite simply the reference for knives “made in France”. was created in the workshop of Joseph Opinel in the 1890s. Since then, it has become a classic all over the world thanks to its design and efficiency. Its 8.5 cm carbon steel blade offers excellent sharpness and strength. The beech wood handle makes the knife easier to grip and therefore safer. The Virobloc safety system invented by Opinel allows the blade to be locked in the open or closed position.
Its size makes it very versatile and indispensable for small DIY jobs, hunting, agricultural work, creative hobbies like wood carving …
Blade of the Opinel pocket knife No 08.
The carbon steel used by Opinel is an unalloyed steel with high carbon content, which achieves excellent durability after thermal treatment. This ensures perfect stability of sharpness, as well as high resistance to wear and easy resharpening. Nevertheless, carbon steel has a low resistance to corrosion caused by moisture. Therefore, certain precautions must be observed: never store your knife in damp places, especially in the dishwasher. Clean the blade with a greased cloth after use and grease the blade and joints regularly.
Handle of the Opinel Carbon Knife No 08
Beech is the most commonly used wood for making Opinel knife handles. Beech wood comes from France, is hard, resistant and easy to work with. It has a homogeneous appearance and the light color varies from yellowish to pinkish. You can recognize the wood by the many dark, small strokes. The handle has been lacquered to better protect it from moisture and dirt.
Safety ring
The Virobloc safety ring was invented by Marcel Opinel in 1955. It is present on all folding knives from model N°06. The Virobloc is cut from stainless steel and consists of two parts: a fixed part and a sliding part. In addition to locking the blade when open (safe use), it is now also possible to lock the blade when closed (safe transport).
